The Buffalo Newspaper Guild is organizing a leadership skills conference June 22-24 in East Aurora in cooperation with other newspapers in the Great Lakes District Council and The Newspaper Guild.
We need to ensure there is a new generation of individuals ready to take on larger roles in the Guild. Effective leadership to deal with management and our own colleagues has never been more important with the changing realities of the media industry and the financial challenges newspapers face.
Participants will include representatives mainly from Guild locals within the Great Lakes District Council, a section of The Newspaper Guild that includes the Buffalo local.
The conference will feature Barbara Saxberg, director of education for the Canadian Media Guild. She also serves as vice president of The Newspaper Guild-Communication Workers of America and of Communication Workers of America-Syndicat des communications d’Amérique Canada.
This is an intensive course designed for individuals already involved in the Guild. It will cover such topics as leadership theories and practices, building union solidarity, conflict resolution, decision-making and understanding organizational change.
The Great Lakes District Council and The Newspaper Guild have pledged $2,500 to help defray the cost of the conference. At the recent Newspaper Guild Multi-Council Meeting in Cleveland, our conference received attention as one of the few hopeful and progressive projects in the newspaper industry.
