Guild approves budget

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild remains in solid financial shape with the recent approval of the 2011-12 budget by the organization’s Executive Committee.

The $165,000 spending plan, approved without a dissenting vote cast, comes as the unit continues to shrink and leadership keeping an eye towards maximizing every dollar that comes in.

“We continue to be cost conscious, while still striving to do the best we can for members,” said Kim Leiser, Guild treasurer.

Overall spending is expected to decrease by about $23,000, with the Guild expecting less expenses in lost time and mobilization.

The Guild’s fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.

“The Guild remains in good financial shape thanks to cost-cutting efforts over the last year or so,” said Guild President Henry Davis. “But we still need to be diligent in case our membership continues to decline.”

The Finance Committee reviewed the proposed budget and recommended the Executive Committee grant its approval, which occurred on Oct. 12.

In other Guild news, the local approved a $250 donation to a fundraiser to benefit sports reporter Allen Wilson, who continues to recover from a serious illness.
