GUILD PREPARES FOR BARGAINING
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild’s bargaining team has been preparing over the last month for an early start to negotiations with News management. The first day of bargaining is scheduled for Thursday, Jan, 18.
Bargaining team members began meeting before the holidays to discuss results from the membership survey distributed in October, outstanding issues with the company and the role of the Guild at The News far into the future.
In response to the overwhelming feedback from members, the Guild’s bargaining team has been drafting a proposal to substantially increase the Guild’s role in the newsroom’s digital products and address management’s request for flexibility without eroding the rights and benefits of current members.
Based on initial conversations, the Guild is hopeful the company will come forward with a very limited agenda that will enable both parties to make rapid progress in negotiations. The current contract is set to expire at the end of July.
The Guild’s bargaining team includes: President Sandy Tan, Editorial; Vice President Dan Kirchberger, Editorial; Treasurer Felice McMillon, ABC; Dave Robinson, Editorial; Patrick Lakamp, Editorial; Diana Gawron, Inside Circulation; District Manager Phil Tavernier, Guild
Administrator Kim Leiser; and Tammy Turnbull, TNG staff representative serving as chief negotiator.
KIRCHBERGER NAMED VICE PRESIDENT
Editorial Steward Dan Kirchberger was elected Vice President of Mobilization and Communication at December’s Executive Committee meeting. He will serve the remaining term of Colin Dabkowski, who stepped down in November.
