NewsGuild busy organizing digital journalists
The NewsGuild wants to be “the voice for digital journalists.”
In a column last month, NewsGuild-CWA President Bernie Lunzer wrote about why the NewsGuild is the right place for digital journalists:
Many journalists went into digital media with high hopes but low expectations because digital profit was illusory. But as many startups have stabilized and even turned a profit, workers have decided that they want some stability, too. It is a wonderful development. Digital media workers are starting to see unions as the tool that can get them there. A spate of successful organizing drives since June—including new Guild units at the Guardian US and Al Jazeera America—are spurring more campaigns.
The Frontier Reporter reached out to Marian Needham, executive vice president of the NewsGuild-CWA, by email and asked her to elaborate on these efforts. (more…)

Jurisdiction: What is it and why you should care
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild regularly deals with issues at The News related to jurisdiction.
Often, the issues get little attention, as Guild officers and News managers work through problems that arise.
No matter how seemingly minor an issue, the Guild has sought to be vigilant about jurisdiction because the principle is so important. So far, we’ve disagreed at times but have avoided a major battle over the issue, and that’s a good thing. (more…)

Update on Guild issues
Ever since we ratified a new contract in July, people have approached me to say it must be nice to have a break until negotiations start again next year.
I understand that. Fighting for a fair contract remains a central part of what The Guild does.
But it is not the only thing we do. The reality is that there is much more to the business of The Guild, and its officers and local staff representative have been busy in recent months. (more…)

New Parking Policy: News and Guild address new rules, regulations for lot
The Guild and The News have resolved issues related to a new parking procedure policy the company is issuing for employees.
The changes in the policy stem from heightened concern over security in the parking lot as a result of increased activity in and around the News building with the popularity of Canalside and other developments nearby, according to the company.
Management in a recent meeting with The Guild summarized a handful of incidents in recent months in the parking lot, including thefts, that prompted the changes. (more…)

Guild members march in annual Labor Day parade
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild once again marched in the annual AFL- CIO Labor Day Parade and Picnic on Monday, Sept. 7. The free event welcomed all Guild members, spouses, kids and well-behaved pets.The fun event celebrated workers and their achievements. The parade headed down Abbott Road in South Buffalo to Cazenovia Park, where free hotdogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks were provided to all.

Guild members and their families joined in the 2013 AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade in South Buffalo. August, 2015 — Please join us as the Buffalo Newspaper Guild once again marches in the annual AFL- CIO Labor Day Parade and Picnic on Monday, Sept. 7. Guild members vote to ratify tentative agreement
The tentative agreement between The Buffalo News and The Buffalo Newspaper Guild-CWA 31026 was ratified in voting Sunday and Monday by a vote of 94-8.
The Guild and The News in June reached the tentative agreement that maintains fully covered health insurance through 2016, provides cash bonuses and a cellphone allowance, and makes a key improvement in our insurance arrangement in the event of premium increases after the contract expires. (more…)
