  • News seeks to end bargaining: Contract talks turn sour with unacceptable company offer

Nearly six months after bargaining started, we stand at a crucial turning point.

On Monday, The News abruptly changed course in contract talks by presenting a “package proposal” to The Guild that would end negotiations with a deal that expires July 31, 2015.

The package provides no pay raise or bonus — not a penny.

It withdraws some company proposals, such as changes to the Classified department, and includes a host of measures management advanced during bargaining that it said would provide it with more flexibility, efficiency or savings. The Guild and The News have tentative agreements or were close to agreement on those measures. (more…)

  • Informational Meetings: Get a status report about negotiations at Oct. 16 sessions

October 9, 2014 — Contract negotiations resumed Monday with The News telling The Guild that the company wanted a two-year deal with no raises.

News management said it would consider offering cash bonuses, but only in return for unspecified concessions.

The Guild bargaining team countered that members are working harder than ever, have received only a 1 percent raise since 2009, and have responded repeatedly to company efforts to cut costs. (more…)

  • Bargaining Update: Talks continue between Guild and News on many issues

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild and The News continue to negotiate over a range of topics.

Last week, The Guild bargaining team presented a package of Guild proposals and responses to News proposals intended to bring resolution to 11 issues, including standardizing trial periods for new members, shifting to a calendar-year basis for calculating vacation, and creating a collaborative forum to improve the efficiency of the Classified department. It was met with a counter-offer by The News that will lead to further discussion and negotiation. (more…)

  • Guild offers support to fired Albany newspaper employee

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild will donate $300 a month through the end of the year to assist Lindsay Connors, an Albany Times Union employee in advertising who was fired in July despite the objections of colleagues.

Connors had made an issue of inappropriate actions in advertising, such as staff told to dance for bosses as part of a competition, the local reported. The Times Union also outsourced ad design work without negotiation with the union. (more…)

  • News issues long list of harsh proposals

June 11, 2014–The Buffalo News on Tuesday issued bargaining proposals targeting job security, health insurance coverage, vacation, sick time, jurisdiction, and other Guild members’ contract provisions and benefits.

Among many controversial proposals, the News said it would outsource Guild members’ work in the Classified Department if changes weren’t made to the cost of running the department and the revenue it generates. But the company made no specific proposals to address those goals. (more…)

  • Guild and News outline bargaining goals

May 29, 2014 — The Buffalo Newspaper Guild’s Bargaining Committee on Wednesday outlined its general goals for the upcoming contract negotiations during the initial meeting with News management.
