Guild takes part in shoreline cleanup project

Seventeen Guild members and friends braved some very nasty weather on the morning of April 20 to take part in the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper’s shoreline cleanup project. By Dan Herbeck
It takes a lot more than howling, bone-chilling winds, icy temperatures, sleet, snow and hail to deter the Buffalo Newspaper Guild’s Bonfatti Cleanup Team.

Volunteers needed for community project

Last year, Guild members cleaned up Red Jacket River Front Park. A litter cleanup of the small park at the Ohio Street Boat Launch on April 20 will mark the second year of a Guild initiative to aid the Spring Shoreline Cleanup coordinated by Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.
We’re conducting this effort annually in memory of our late friend, reporter and Guild leader John “Jay” Bonfatti. Jay, who died in 2008, loved the outdoors and believed strongly in caring for the natural wonders of Western New York. (more…)

The News adopts social media guidelines
The Buffalo News has added guidelines on social media use in the workplace to its existing Electronic Communications Policy.
The Electronic Communications Policy, which took effect in 2000, covers the use of such electronic communications equipment as telephones, voice mail, facsimile, email and Internet access. The new language covers social media, including Facebook,Twitter, YouTube, blogs, wikis, forums and other similar websites and social networks.
The following is a brief explanation of how the social media guidelines came to be incorporated into the Electronic Communications Policy. (more…)

2013 State of the News: Operating profits up as overall revenues fall
Last year was the first time in decades that The Buffalo News did not pull in at least $100 million in annual revenues, Publisher and President Warren T. Colville told employees at the recent State of the News meetings.
Operating profits have improved, however. And 2012 was the first time the company met its own goals for making money from digital products. (more…)

A look back at 2012: Guild accomplishments in tough times
We all know we work in a very uncertain time in the newspaper industry.
Profits are declining, staffs are getting smaller, and the employees left are working harder while making concessions in wages and benefits.
This is a huge challenge for unions, including The Guild. (more…)

Guild reaches out to journalists in Newtown
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild provided a chicken wing lunch Dec. 27 to the staff of the Danbury News-Times, the daily newspaper that regularly covers Newtown, Conn. where the mass school shooting took place on Dec. 14.
It was our way – in Buffalo style – to acknowledge the tragedy and show our support for the reporters, editors and other newspaper personnel with the tough job of communicating this story to the public. (more…)
