Milt Joffe, dean of The News’ copy desk, celebrates 50-year Guild anniversary
Veteran copy desk editor Milt Joffe is, by far, the longest tenured Guild member at The Buffalo News. He started as a reporting intern in 1961 before being hired full time in 1963. He was the youngest copy editor ever to grace the copy desk at age 21 and was named chief copy editor before age 30.
Aside from a brief stint as sports editor from 1977 until 1981, he’s been the dean of News style and a respected mentor to many. We honor him this week. Thanks, Milt!

News eyes new health insurance strategy
The Guild bargaining team met last week for the first official meeting with News management at which the company presented its strategy to significantly reshape health insurance choices for all employees.
The strategy, as preliminarily envisioned by The News, could leave coverage to Guild members largely unchanged, at least for a year, while offering more health plan choices. But it’s early in a bargaining process that got a late start, and it remains uncertain how contract talks will play out. (more…)
