Looking ahead — Membership meeting 5:30 pm Wednesday
With the early retirement incentive behind us, The Buffalo News is a smaller organization, and so is the Guild. That poses unique challenges for each of as members who are faced with the prospect of doing the same work with fewer people.
How will we manage? And how are other newspapers managing?
Come share your thoughts Wednesday, learn what’s happening throughout the building, and how the Guild intends to face the upcoming challenges Wednesday. We’ll meet in the first-floor auditorium at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday’s meeting is the second of four general membership meetings the Guild will hold this year. (more…)

Company exceeds $1.1 million savings goal through early retirements
News management exceeded its buyout goals this week through the early retirement incentive that expired Monday. In all, 27 Guild employees will be off the payroll by the end of the week. Their wages and benefits represent a savings to The News of $1.7 million, substantially higher than its goal of $1.1 million.
The early retirement incentive, crafted with the help of the Guild, provided additional years of service or age credits toward employee pensions. (more…)

News unlikely to bring back retirees as part timers
The Buffalo News is not likely to offer part-time jobs to newsroom employees who take a buyout.
Company executives, during a recent meeting with union leaders, said the current state of the newspaper’s finances make it difficult for them to bring back Editorial Guild members who retire.
Managers said no future newsroom retiree has been offered a part-time position but indicated that could change down the road if The News’ finances improve or if certain staffing needs arise. (more…)
