News earns $15 million amid warning of future losses
The Buffalo News earned $15.3 million last year, down from about $19 million the year before but more than what the company projected.
A huge, recession-fueled drop in advertising revenue – from $93 million in 2008 to $76 million last year – helped cause the decline in profits.
It also prompted News Publisher Stan Lipsey to warn that, if current trends continue, The News could lose money as early as next year. (more…)

January Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

Buffalo News changing corporate structure
The Buffalo News is restructuring – again.
News management recently informed the Guild of its intent to legally change its internal corporate organization, but said the move will not alter the company’s long standing relationship with the union or its members.
Company executives also rejected any suggestion that the move is a first step in Berkshire Hathaway selling or closing the paper.
The restructuring would make The News, now a division of Old Berkshire Hathaway, wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Old Berkshire Hathaway also is wholly-owed subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

By law changes approved
The Guild’s local membership approved bylaw changes this month that will allow the union to hold quarterly, not monthly, membership meetings.
The changes, months in the works, also will alter the way Guild members are informed of local membership meetings and how they receive the local newsletter, the Frontier Reporter.

2010 Meeting Dates
The Guild’s local membership approved a schedule of 2010 membership meetings. The schedule reflects bylaw changes that allow for quarterly, not monthly, membership meetings.
The location will be determined later. Here are the times, days and dates:
February 10: 5:30 p.m., Wednesday
May 5: 5:30 p.m., Wednesday
August 14: TBA, Saturday (meeting will be held as part of summer picnic)
November 17: 5:30 p.m., Wednesday -

Guild to put bylaw changes to vote
The Guild’s international parent has signed off on bylaw changes that will allow the local to switch to quarterly membership meetings.
The changes, if approved, also would alter the way members are informed of local meetings and how they receive the local newsletter, the Frontier Reporter.
A final membership vote on the bylaw changes is expected at the next local meeting at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 15 in the CWA office, 821 Elk St. Any change in the bylaws requires membership approval.
