Three more unions are joining the effort to revive the Council of Newspaper Unions at The Buffalo News.

Leaders of the three unions showed up at a recent meeting – the second in as many months – of labor leaders eager to resurrect the Council, a coalition of News’ unions that dissolved a few years ago.

The six unions now involved in the effort selected Tammy Turnbull, the Guild’s local service representative, to serve as Council chairwoman. (more…)

  • Guild takes steps toward quarterly meetings

The Guild is moving forward with plans for quarterly membership meetings by removing one of the legal obstacles.

The union, at a recent membership meeting, created a committee to study the local’s bylaws with an eye toward deciding what changes are needed to allow for a reduction in membership meetings.

At the urging of its Healthy Locals Committee, the Guild is considering a switch from monthly to quarterly meetings.

“Right now, we have the same eight people at every monthly meeting,” said Kim Leiser, chief steward in Inside Circulation and one of three Guild members on the new bylaw committee. “We need to do something to shake it up. We need to do something to increase involvement and interest.”

  • News’ unions talk about collaboration

If there was ever a time for organized labor at The Buffalo News to be united, it’s now.

And that is exactly what’s happening.

Earlier this month, the leaders of several unions at The News gathered to talk about resurrecting the Council of Newspaper Unions, a coalition of unions that dissolved a few years ago.

“Given the state of the industry and the economics of The News, the unions feel its important to work together,” said Tammy Turnbull, the Guild’s local service representative.

Turnbull said the group plans to meet again soon with the goal of talking to each other about our dealings with management and working together whenever possible.

“At the very least,” she said, “we want to keep open the lines of communication.”

Historically, the Council served as an important way for The News’s numerous unions to communicate, especially during bargaining.

Of the unions at paper, the Guild is by the largest in terms of membership. It also is one of several CWA unions.
