Volunteers needed for Guild community project
A litter cleanup of Red Jacket River Front Park on April 21 will be the first activity for Guild members in a new union initiative to give back to the community.
Guild members are encouraged to bring family members and friends to the kickoff event, which is being done in connection with the annual Spring Shoreline Cleanup coordinated by Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, as part of the Great American Cleanup.
Our plan is to conduct this Guild effort annually in memory of our late friend, reporter and Guild leader John “Jay” Bonfatti. Jay, who died in 2008, loved the outdoors and believed strongly in caring for the natural wonders of Western New York.

State of the News: Company still profitable, revenue continues to drop
The Buffalo News made a lot less money in 2011. A whole lot less.
But here’s the good news: The Buffalo News made decent money in 2011. A whole lot more than many other newspapers.
“We had a profitable year – a very profitable year by most standards, but far off what we’ve done in the past, “ Publisher Stan Lipsey told employees during the annual State of the News meeting on Feb. 1.
“The newspaper industry will never be what it once was,” Lipsey said. “The news is moving forward” as a stronger, leaner company developing new sources of revenue, from online ventures to doing the printing work for other newspapers.

Goals outlined for 2012
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild spent last year immersed in negotiations over buyouts and a new contract, but there’s little time to rest. This year promises to be busy, too.
We have established a handful of goals that we hope to accomplish or, at least, make significant headway on in 2012.

Community Service Committee formed
The traditional role of a union is to advocate for better wages, benefits and working conditions. We give members a voice.
But unions also have a long history of community service, and The Buffalo Newspaper Guild has set a goal in 2012 to fulfill this other role.
