Holiday party set for Dec. 3
The annual Guild holiday party will be held Saturday, Dec. 3 in the new banquet facilities of the Pearl Street Grill & Brewery called Pearl @ The Webb.
The event is scheduled to run from 5 to 9 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m.
Tickets are on sale, and are $10 for members and retirees and $15 for non-members.
The deadline to purchase tickets is Monday, Nov. 28.

New contract ratified
Guild members overwhelmingly ratified a new contract today, with a vote count of 114-to-9. The turnout represents slightly more than half of all Guild members.

A ratification vote on the tentative agreement between the Buffalo Newspaper Guild and The Buffalo News will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in the fifth-floor cafeteria. Please do not forget to cast your ballot!

Tentative agreement reached
The Guild and The News reached a tentative agreement Friday morning that includes no changes in health insurance, and a cash bonus of $400 for part-timers and $800 for full-timers.
The two-year agreement, which must be ratified by Guild members, was unanimously endorsed by the bargaining team.
“This is a good contract considering the bleak state of the newspaper industry and the economy, said Guild President Henry Davis. “We came a long way since the start of bargaining in May with the threat of layoffs and wage reductions.”

Guild approves budget
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild remains in solid financial shape with the recent approval of the 2011-12 budget by the organization’s Executive Committee.
The $165,000 spending plan, approved without a dissenting vote cast, comes as the unit continues to shrink and leadership keeping an eye towards maximizing every dollar that comes in.

Movement on money
The Guild bargaining committee decided Wednesday to postpone a planned “byline blackout” originally set for Sunday and Monday after making some progress this week in contract negotiations with The News.
Company executives started talking about offering Guild employees a cash lump-sum bonus, but have said they will not agree to a percentage raise in pay. Previously, The News had been insisting on zero wage increases in a two-year contract. (more…)

Why share the savings?
Buffalo Newspaper Guild members recently offered handwritten notes to the publisher about why they deserve a share of the savings the Guild has helped this company create (nearly $6 million since 2009, including buyout and healthcare savings this year, and the loss of roughly 100 full-time employees). The original notes were presented to Stan Lipsey. Here is what our members said:
- Every day when I’m at work, I see my co-workers doing their best to deliver a worthwhile newspaper to our readers. Each of them is doing so much more without complaint than just a year or two ago. Because they care, management should, too. (more…)
