Ongoing mobilization and “byline blackout”
A reminder to all Guild members that this Friday and every Friday is Black Frlday. Please wear black as negotiations continue. Mobilization efforts will be ongoing and strengthen as the Guild continues to press the company on key issues.
Little progress was made this week in negotiations between the Guild and management over the key issues of wages and the 5 percent health care clause. The Guild bargaining team continues to press for monetary improvement on behalf of its members. (more…)

Why share the savings – Take 2
Last Friday, the Guild asked all members to leave a Post-It note on the fifth floor letting management know personally why they deserve a share of the savings the Guild has helped this company find over the years. We had white sheets of paper temporarily hanging from the fifth-floor railing to give members a place to stick their messages.
The sheets were hanging for barely an hour before management demanded they be taken down because they were attached to News property. Guild representatives explained the display was temporary and that we planned to take it down in an hour, but apparently, News managers were supremely bothered and incapable of leaving this quiet and non-disruptive job action alone.

Wages are a sticking point
Both sides closer to agreement on other issues
The News and the Guild on Wednesday traded contract proposals, finding conceptual agreement on many issues, including health insurance.
But wages remain one of the key issues that separate the parties.

Job actions for today and Friday
►Thursday at noon: Parking lot walkout (6 p.m. walkout for nightside staff)
In response to management’s demand that employees pay for parking in The News’ lot, the Guild will be distributing vinyl static clings featuring the Guild logo for all union members to affix to the interior of their rear car windows.
We ask all Guild members, who are able to take a brief break, to leave their desks promptly at noon with their clings and car keys as we collectively affix the clings to our cars.

No Zeros — Let management know that we deserve a raise
9.28.2011 – We are asking all Guild members to wear a sticker today proclaiming to management that we deserve a raise. The Guild initially proposed a three-year contract with modest 2 percent annual raises. The News’ counterproposal was to give us ZERO percent raises. That’s an outrageous proposal from a company on track to make a $10 million profit this year.

Company proposal unacceptable
9.27.11 – Any hopes that the Guild could collaborate with The News to help control expenses and increase revenues were dashed Monday.
News management responded to the Guild’s major contract proposals with an unacceptable counterproposal that is all about financial pain and no gain.
Among other things, it opens the door to employees paying much, much more for health insurance. It also would allow The News to force employees to pay for parking, unilaterally reduce or eliminate cafeteria service, and withhold raises – again.
We wonder if The News is serious about making a deal.
