We had some political mayhem and the close of Lee Enterprises’ fiscal year, all of which has spelled trouble for the Guild. Check out new features and all the Guild news you may have from the summer and fall in the latest edition of The Frontier Reporter newsletter.

  • Progress made on key issues

More work still needed in other major areas; informational meeting Thursday.

9.19.2011 — After a two-week break from bargaining, contract negotiations resumed Wednesday with The News and The Guild making progress on a handful of key issues, including health insurance.

Still, several significant matters remain unresolved for now, and discussions over the next few weeks will be important.

“Hopefully, we can address the remaining issues in ways that are acceptable to both sides, said Guild President Henry Davis. “Hopefully, The News will see that its employees are reeling from staff reductions and other changes, and just want some stability and security. Hopefully, we can avoid the public actions often needed to bring bargaining to a close.”

  • So long, Heaney

The newsroom says goodbye to longtime Guild leader and investigative reporter Jim Heaney, whose aggressive leadership and outspoken presence at the Guild bargaining table has helped safeguard the jobs and benefits of those of us who continue to work here.

On Thursday, the newsroom paid tribute to Heaney and other Guild members who have accepted the most recent buyout and are leaving The News. A total of 10 newsroom employees have taken the buyout.

  • The shrinking Buffalo News

The most recent News buyout led to the loss of 21 full-time Guild members, but when taken in the context of the past two years, the loss to the Guild and to the newspaper is much greater.

Since 2009, a total of 98 full-time jobs were eliminated across all Guild-represented departments through layoffs and buyouts. That figure does not include Guild positions left vacant because of promotions, routine turnover and other retirements.

To remind management of these losses, we ask all Guild members to prominently display table tents this week, titled the “Incredible Shrinking Buffalo News.” We also ask Guild members to continue to wear their Guild lapel pins daily. (more…)

  • No layoffs; 21 Guild members take buyout

8.17.11 – A total of 21 Newspaper Guild employees took the latest, pension-based voluntary separation offer presented by The Buffalo News.

Management said it came close enough to, or exceeded, its goal of cutting Guild payroll and benefits by $1.8 million and, as a result, does not anticipate layoffs to cut costs.

“It’s great news,” said Guild President Henry Davis. “We’re sad to see some of our colleagues leave and wish them well. But it’s a relief to know that we avoided layoffs.”
