Guild organizes leadership skills conference
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild is organizing a leadership skills conference June 22-24 in East Aurora in cooperation with other newspapers in the Great Lakes District Council and The Newspaper Guild.
We need to ensure there is a new generation of individuals ready to take on larger roles in the Guild. Effective leadership to deal with management and our own colleagues has never been more important with the changing realities of the media industry and the financial challenges newspapers face.

Re-energizing the Labor-Management Committee
On Thursday, The News and the Guild relaunched its Labor-Management Committee after a year’s hiatus. The committee was established with great promise in 2009 but experienced limited success.
It’s our goal to reinvigorate the committee, which was envisioned as a collaborative effort to improve communication between management and the Guild and work on joint projects that will help safeguard The News’ ability to remain stable and profitable in the future.
“The LMC is meant to be a collaborative committee where both management and Guild members can comfortably come together to exchange ideas and work together on projects we believe in,” said Guild Vice President Sandy Tan, who co-chairs the committee with Human Resources Vice President Dan Farberman.

Multi-Council Guild meeting centers on future
The Newspaper Guild conducted a multi-council meeting on April 20, 21 and 22 in Cleveland, Ohio, with a majority of the U.S. Guild units represented, as well as members of the Canadian Executive Council.
Although no official business was conducted, it was an opportunity for all present to discuss ideas for the Guild’s immediate and long-term future, with an emphasis on organizing, consolidation and regional alignments.
Organizing new members continues to be a primary focus for all Guild locals, and units were encouraged to think “outside of the box” in respect to who should be included in organizing campaigns. As newspapers have gotten smaller, it is more important than ever to recruit new members through organizing so that the Guild can continue to thrive, Guild officials said.
