Lump sum pension buyout advice for former employees
The Buffalo News is offering a special one-time lump sum benefit offer for certain employees who left the newspaper but have yet to start collecting their pension.
The one-time option to receive a pension benefit in a single payment will be offered from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31. (more…)

Two dozen Guild and family members enjoy Labor Day Parade
Two dozen Guild and family members enjoyed the warm weather on Monday and marched in the annual 2012 AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade in South Buffalo on Monday. Guild members tossed candy to parade goers and marched with signs encouraging the public to support the Guild and protect quality journalism.

Guild members learn about commercial printing at The News
The Buffalo News’ commercial printing operation continues to grow at a rapid rate as it adds a new commercial press and continues to print and expanding array of products for its clients.
That was the message Director of Production Bryan Carr delivered at a recent information session sponsored by the Buffalo News Labor Management Committee, a joint initiative of the Buffalo Newspaper Guild and The News.
Dubbed a “Lunch and Learn” session, the event was held in the first-floor auditorium on June 13 to give Guild members new insights into revenue-generating parts of The Buffalo News operation that may be unfamiliar to many.
The News’ move into commercial printing — which involves other newspapers being printed atThe News’ facility, as well as other print products — began in approximately 2006/2007 with the rebranding of the service as TBN Direct. (more…)

‘Lunch and Learn’ series kicks off Wednesday
All Guild members are invited to join Bryan Carr for a “lunch and learn session” on Wednesday about one of the The News’ most successful and expanding revenue-generating operations in recent years, the commercial printing business.
The Buffalo News is more than a newspaper business these days. Come join us for pizza at noon on Wednesday, June 13, and find out about the News’ web and sheet-fed printing operation. Learn more about the new press being installed on the second floor, see examples of the types of projects The News is producing, find out who The News’ clients are, and what the future holds for this growing part of The Buffalo News business.

Meet Mark and Mike, newest executive committee members
They’ve been hard at work in their positions for six months already, but it’s not too late to introduce them.
Mike Harrington and Mark Sommer are the newest members of the Buffalo Newspaper Guild’s Executive Committee, appointed to fill vacancies on the board in November.
Mark also recently became the Guild’s vice president for contract compliance, taking over the post formerly held by Phil Fairbanks.
