Guild seeks nominations for leadership
Oct. 14, 2016 — Who runs The Buffalo Newspaper Guild? A lot of us, and you could be one of them.
In November, The Buffalo Newspaper Guild will begin the process of selecting members to serve in all positions of leadership for three-year terms. Any member in good standing with a commitment to serving the best interests of the organization may be nominated.
Good leadership is at the heart of our long-term future. We strongly encourage interested members to think about how they might play a role in improving the workplace and securing the future for all of us who work at The News. Training will be provided for those who need it. (more…)

Guild proposes changes to its by-laws
The Buffalo Newspaper Guild is governed by a set of by-laws, and it’s time to consider amending them.
The proposed changes reflect changes in the Guild and in technology.
We have email and a website now, for instance, so we’re no longer solely dependent on paper bulletins to communicate with members. (more…)

Guild launches social media campaign
In June, the Buffalo Newspaper Guild quietly launched a social media campaign aimed at sharing the stories and faces of dedicated guild members. The first featured Guild member was reporter Lou Michel, who shared his inspiration for getting into this often challenging business. (more…)

Join the Labor Day parade
Please join us as the Buffalo Newspaper Guild once again marches in the annual AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade and Picnic on Monday, Sept. 5. The free event welcomes all Guild members, spouses, kids and well-behaved pets.Even if you haven’t been to the Labor Day Parade in recent years, we hope you’ll make time for this fun event that celebrates workers and their achievements. The parade will head down Abbott Road in South Buffalo to Cazenovia Park, where free hotdogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks will be provided to all. (more…)

Guild members support organizing drive at Lakeland Ledger
For decades, the state of Florida has been entirely free of union newspapers.That changed in August, when the staff of the Lakeland Ledger voted overwhelmingly to join The Newspaper Guild-CWA after the paper was acquired by GateHouse Media last year. (more…)

#NewsMatters in coordinated bargaining strategy
13 Guild bargaining units at Digital First Media groups have joined forces in a coordinated bargaining strategy.
Bill Ross, executive director of the Newspaper Guild of Philadelphia, provided an update on the strategy at TNG’s multi-council meeting in Cleveland in late April.
The stated goal is to “develop a coordinated bargaining strategy in upcoming negotiations with Digital First media. The goal is to coordinate efforts to increase leverage and to engage in joint economic bargaining on wages to secure fair pay increases and economic relief for members nationwide.” (more…)
